Just minutes north of Mendocino Village, the completely restored Point Cabrillo Lighthouse includes the historic 1909 Light Station, Lightkeeper’s Home and over 270 undeveloped acres of coastal bluffs and grasslands.

Once in year when the gray whales migrate along the Mendocino Coast, the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse joins the celebrations with lots of activities for adults and children. The Point Cabrillo bluffs are a perfect spot to watch whales.

Located on Albion Street in the village of Mendocino, the Temple of Kwan Tai reminds us of the diverse past of the Mendocino Coast. This Taoist Temple has been maintained and preserved  by four generations of its founders’ descendents . The Temple was built sometime between 1854 and 1883 and is one of only remaining buildings relating to the early Chinese pioneers.

Tours of the Temple are available by appointment.

This historic home was built in 1861 by William H. Kelley,  one of Mendocino’s founding fathers. The Kelley House maintains an extensive collection of historic photographs, local genealogical data, publications and research materials about the Mendocino Coast and the pioneers who made the Coast their home. The volunteer docents rotate exhibits about Mendocino’s history. Copies of materials and photographs are available to the public for a reasonable fee. 

The Kelley House Museum is 501 (c)3 non-profit and funded primarily through donations, memberships and fund-raisers.

The Kelley House located on Main Street is set amongst a garden and includes a spring-fed pond with resident geese. Visit the past and the Book Shop.

Every year in the summer they put up a large splendid tent on the Mendocino Headlands and have breathtaking concerts featuring the glorious Festival Orchestra, the popular Big Band concert, chamber music ensembles, dance, blues, jazz, world, and folk music. Musicians come from all over to play in the wonderful music event. It is even fun to walk through town and hear the music in the background mixing the sounds of the ocean.

The Frolic, a two mast clipper ship, was sailing from Hong Kong in 1850 destined for San Francisco when it sank off the coast just a few miles north of Mendocino at Point Cabrillo.  Edward Horatio Faucon was the captain of this former opium-runner and it included a crew of Portuguese-speaking Lascars (from India), Malays and Chinese.

The Frolic’s cargo of silks, gold jewelry, lacquer ware, porcelain bowls, tables, trunks and ale for booming San Franciscians and gold rush miners was not salvaged, except possibly by the local Pomo Indians who were said to be wearing silk shawls.  In hopes of salvaging the Frolic, Henry Meiggs,  prominent in the lumber industry,  came from San Francisco to Coast and later established a lumber mill.  The mill called Meiggsville was renamed Mendocino.

Dr. Thomas Layton, an archaeologist at San Jose State University re-discovered the Frolic and over several years collected many artifacts which are displayed at the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and other museums.

The Mendocino Botanical Gardens has a wonderful event every year - Art in the Gardens. It is a Garden Party with over 60 Artists and dozens of Wineries. Watch the artist demonstrate their artistic talents and show off their art, taste the wine, purchase a picnic basket and enjoy a lunch or bid in the Silent Auction. Art and Wine is available for sale. The proceeds from this event benefits the Gardens.
